USB Tethering E71 to OSX

I can already tether my Nokia phone to my laptop via WIFI but this eats battery life, so I wanted to tether via USB, and after looking around the internet, I found a solution.
A while back I purchased JoikuSpot, so I could tether devices with my E71 via USB, and works extremely well but kills battery life. So, instead, I wanted to use USB connection on my E71 to tether my Macbook Pro, which will be a little easier on battery life.
Apple changed the format for the modem definitions files in OSX 10.5 (Leopard), so previous solutions found on the web such as Ross Barkman’s modem scripts no longer work. After looking further I found updates @ m.blog who has created updated modem scripts for Leopard (and Snow Leopard), which can be downloaded here.
Configuring OSX for Nokia E71 tethering couldn’t be easier. These instructions should work for other Nokia E and N phones too with OSX 10.5 onwards.
Download the HSDPA modem script and then copy to “/Library/Modem Scripts”.
Connect your phone via USB to your Mac in “PC Suite” mode.
Next in OSX, goto Network Preferences. Create a new Network Interface. In the Interface Drop down, there may be several Nokia E71 interfaces available, as below ( click to enlarge ). For me, the second option worked, “Nokia E71 usbmodem 1d1B”. If this option doesn’t work for you then try the first.
You should end up with a sheet looking something like below ( click to enlarge ):

Now, select the new interface service just created, and click Advanced, this will display the advanced configuration sheet. Make the following changes in the Modem tab:
- Vendor - choose Nokia
- Model - choose HSDPA ( this choice will appear *only* if you’ve copied the Modem script as described previously.
- APN: Your cell phone service provider Access Point Name. If you don’t know the APN, see this page, or contact your provider.
- CID: Try 1 first, if this doesn’t work, try 2, 3 etc. 1 worked for me with no problems.
You should end up with a sheet looking something like below ( click to enlarge ):
No other configuration changes are required so click OK to close the sheet.
The final step. Enter the APN ( Access Point Name ) as the telephone number. Depending on your cell phone service, you may require Account Name and Password. You should have your E71 Network configuration looking similar to:
Now, click Connection and your phone should connect to your cell internet service. You can see what OSX is doing by opening Console.App in /Applications/Utilities.
For kicks, why not try a speed test to check how fast your connection is?
